Crumpet Loaf is Award Winner

Greenhalgh’s has won a top honour for Product innovation at the annual Baking Industry Awards 2012 evening on Wednesday 12th September (the equivalent of the Industry Oscars) after wowing judges with a new Australian-inspired delicacy the Crumpet Loaf.

The winning loaf was created by Greenhalgh’s Bakery Manager, Stephen Jones, after Director David Smart asked him to replicate a half scone, half crumpet ‘chewy bread’ he had discovered during a visit to Australia. Several weeks later, Stephen had not only replicated it but improved its colour, crumb, crust and texture and Greenhalgh’s version of the Crumpet Loaf was born.

Already a hit with customers, judges at the Baking Industry Awards were similarly impressed. Stephen’s efforts were recognised last night in front of more than 800 industry guests at a gala awards ceremony at London’s Park Lane Hilton, as he was presented with the award by former Neighbours, Joseph and Strictly Come Dancing star, Jason Donovan together with John Cummings, Category Director of Bakery at award sponsor Asda.Celebrating the award, Stephen, who has worked at Greenhalgh’s for 27 years, said: “Crumpet Loaf is basically flour, yeast, sugar, water, and baking powder so it’s is like a crumpet mix. It’s quite unique and a great breakfast or teatime treat. We trialed it in our shops and customers just love it.”
